2021 Volvo V90 Cross Country axed

Volvo’s biggest wagon is saying adjö to Australia.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country wagon will be retired from local showrooms in the middle of 2021, with no large replacement planned.

Instead, Volvo will push the smaller V60 Cross Country as its only wagon in Australia.

“We’re going to try it, see how it goes, but I think there’s some benefit in simplification of the offer. We think the V60 Cross Country will appeal to a lot of previous XC70 Cross Country customers,” ex-Volvo Australia managing director Nick Connor told CarExpert.

“It’s a very good all-round product and we’ll see how it goes,” Mr Connor said.

The V90 Cross Country was introduced locally in 2017 as a replacement for the XC70, with the more conventional V90 wagon not making the trip to Australia. Sales have been slow, as buyers look to large SUVs like the XC90 instead of old-fashioned wagons.

Volvo sold just 97 Cross Countries in 2020, compared to 940 examples of the seven-seat XC90 SUV. The smaller V60 wagon also outsold the V90 Cross Country, with 265 delivered last year.

The death of the V90 Cross Country leaves the Audi A6 Allroad to go it alone in the large wagon segment Down Under.

Gone are the BMW 5 Series Touring, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate, and the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain isn’t a confirmed arrival with the wider 2021 E-Class range.
