Hyundai is launching its first Chinese-built model in Australia, and the new mid-size electric SUV will enter one of the most hotly competitive segments Down Under.
The Hyundai Elexio electric vehicle (EV) is due here during the first quarter (January to March) of 2026, and is being launched in a single variant.
As part of an introductory offer, for which there’s no end date yet, the Elexio Elite is priced at $59,990 drive-away for both private and fleet buyers.

That slots it neatly between the small Kona Electric – currently being offered until March 31 for $59,990 drive-away in top-spec Premium trim – and the mid-size Ioniq 5. A recent reshuffle of the latter’s lineup also helped give the incoming electric SUV some breathing room, with the entry-level Ioniq 5 variant axed and base price rising $6400 to $76,200 before on-road costs.
At 4615mm long, it’s fractionally shorter than the Ioniq 5 – its 2750mm wheelbase is 250mm shorter than that of the Ioniq 5, and boot space is 19 litres down for a total of 506L.
However, the Elexio has a taller and more upright body overall and Hyundai promises “generous interior space”.
Like the Ioniq 5, the Elexio is based on a version of Hyundai Motor Company’s E-GMP platform, albeit with a 400V electrical system.

Hyundai Australia says it has developed a bespoke local suspension and steering tune for the Elexio – something that not even all of its Korean-sourced vehicles receive – to “deliver an optimal blend of comfort, stability, refinement and handling… to best suit our broad spectrum of uniquely challenging road conditions”.
Engineers from Hyundai Motor Company flew to Sydney and worked with the local Australian chassis tuning team, evaluating a range of suspension components including springs, dampers and anti-roll bars.
The Elexio will be the first Hyundai in Australia to come with the Korean brand’s new Connect-C infotainment system, displayed on a 27-inch, ultra-thin 4K panoramic display.
