MG is finally launching a mid-size electric SUV in Australia, and it's sharply priced against the top-selling Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7.
The MG S6 EV is available in dealerships nationwide from today, priced at $49,990 drive-away in single-motor rear-wheel drive Essence guise.
The only other member of the MG S6 EV lineup is the dual-motor all-wheel drive Essence, priced at $56,990 drive-away.

The single-motor rear-wheel drive variant produces 180kW of power and offers 530km of WLTP range; the dual-motor all-wheel drive variant ups outputs to 266kW but reduces range somewhat to 485km.
MG Motor Australia hasn't published battery capacities or chemistries, though a look at overseas spec sheets confirms the battery pack is a 77kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit.
Claimed 0-100km/h times are 7.3 seconds and 5.1 seconds, respectively, while the MG S6 EV has a braked towing capacity of 1500kg.
MG quotes a 10-80 per cent charge time of 38 minutes at 144kW on a 150kW DC fast-charger. Both variants come standard with a heat pump and a one-pedal drive mode.

The MG S6 EV measures 4708mm long, 1912mm wide and 1664mm tall, making it 84mm shorter, 70mm narrower and 20mm taller than the Model Y.
Under the bonnet there’s an 86-litre storage compartment (67L in the Essence AWD), while down back there’s 581L of boot space, expanding to 1690L with the rear seats folded.
The mid-size electric SUV features MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, and shares its platform with the smaller MG S5 EV and MG 4. It replaces the Marvel R, which was never built in right-hand drive but which was exported to markets such as Europe.
The name ‘Essence’ is usually used to denote a top-spec MG, but it’s unclear if cheaper variants of the MG S6 EV will follow.

Standard equipment on the MG S6 EV includes:
MG is offering the new SUV with either a Grey Ivory interior featuring Nordic Ashwood faux wood inlays, or a ‘Dark’ interior with faux carbon-fibre.
The standard exterior paint finish is Dover White, with the following colours being optional:

As with other MGs, the new SUV is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, extended to 10 years or 250,000km if you service within its dealer network.
With a price of $49,990 drive-away, the entry-level MG S6 EV undercuts the base Model Y Premium RWD ($58,900 before on-road costs) and Sealion 7 Premium ($54,990 before on-roads).
The MG S6 EV slots in above the small MG S5 EV (priced from $38,990 drive-away) and under the MG IM6, the latter a model borrowed from another SAIC Motor-owned brand called IM Motors and priced from $60,990 drive-away.

MG now has seven electric vehicles (EVs) on sale in Australia: the MG 4 EV Urban and MG 4 EV small hatchbacks; the MG S5 EV, MG S6 EV and IM6 SUVs; the IM5 liftback; and the Cyberster convertible. It has also confirmed an electric version of the U9 ute for a local launch.
Last year, MG was Australia’s fourth-best selling EV brand behind Tesla, BYD and Kia, though its sales dropped by 21.8 per cent.
With the entry-level MG 4 EV Urban having arrived this year and the brand now having a rival for the Model Y, Australia’s best-selling EV last year, MG could well topple Kia for a podium position in 2026.
