Last of Renault Megane R.S. Ultime models all but gone

The cult classic Renault Megane R,S, is set to end production in the next few months, with the likelihood of a future all-electric performance model still in doubt.

Renault is saying farewell to the petrol-powered Megane and its Renault Sport sub-brand with a special edition called the Renault Megane R.S. Ultime, of which only 40 are coming to Australia and almost all are already spoken for.

The company’s local boss, Glen Sealey, told CarExpert the Ultime variants are mostly gone despite not having even gone into production just yet.

“Once they are gone, they are gone,” Mr Sealey told CarExpert.

Renault will build the final edition of the Megane R.S. in March and the 40 Ultime will be followed by around 20 more of the standard Megane R.S. Trophy models which will see the end of the hot hatch in our market and globally.

The special edition Ultimes are priced at $67,500 before on-road costs with the six-speed manual transmission and $70,500 before on-roads with the six-speed dual-clutch automatic – up $4500 on the standard R.S. Trophy.

Globally a total of 1976 Ultimes will be produced overall, commemorating the founding of Renault Sport in 1976.

The powertrain of all Megane R.S. variants remains as a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing 221kW of power at 6000rpm and 420Nm of torque at 3200rpm (400Nm with the manual).

The claimed 0-100km/h time is 5.7 seconds, with combined cycle fuel economy of 8.3L/100km with the manual and 8L/100km with the auto. It requires 98 RON premium unleaded fuel.

As with the standard Trophy, the Ultime is backed by the same five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with five years of roadside assistance and five years of capped-price servicing, equalling a total of $2645 over five years.
