Mercedes-AMG reveals the interior of first electric 'four-door coupe'

Mercedes-AMG has revealed two things about its first-ever dedicated electric sedan: the name, and its interior.

The new high-performance EV will serve as a continuation of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe nameplate. Like the original it will use a different platform to the two-door GT models.

In fact this time around, the two- and four-door GT cars will have even less in common, with the two-door models sticking with combustion engines, and the four-door models debuting AMG’s in-house dedicated EV platform, dubbed AMG.EA.

Drivetrain details have yet to be revealed, but we expect the exterior to be heavily inspired by the GT XX concept revealed in the middle of last year.

For now, we’ll have to content ourselves with the car’s interior, which, like many luxury vehicles, features three screens. Instead of living in a continuous plane across the dashboard, or seeming to form one giant display, the GT 4-Door keeps all three displays separate.

Ahead of the driver is a standard 10.2-inch instrumentation display, while for the front passenger there’s an optional 14.0-inch touchscreen. The most eye-catching of the three screens is the 14.0-inch touchscreen unit in the centre, which is aggressively angled towards the driver.

While physical controls remain on the steering wheel and doors, climate control functions have moved entirely onto the touchscreen. Thankfully there’s a volume dial/off switch, as well as buttons for the hazard lights and voice commands, living in a little strip behind the two ventilated wireless smartphone chargers.

Three larger dials live along the centre tunnel controlling the level of throttle response, steering agility, and traction control intervention.

The pictured car is fitted with a Burmester sound system, carbon-fibre trim on the door arm rests and centre tunnel, and rear climate controls. Faux suede adorns the steering wheel, the seats, and pillar trim.

There’s a full-length panoramic glass roof with individual dimming zones for each outboard passenger, and multiple layers of coating to reduce heat intrusion in summer and heat loss in winter. A roof with a carbon-fibre-style pattern will be available in some markets.

At the back bucket-style seats for two people are standard, but a more traditional three-seat bench is optional. Split-folding backrests are standard regardless of the configuration.
