After launching its latest Full Self-Driving Beta with much fanfare, Tesla has conceded it’s not working at a high enough standard.
Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, took to Twitter to opine “FSD Beta 9.2 is actually not great”.
“We’re trying to have a single stack for both highway & city streets, but it requires massive [neural network] retraining,” he tweeted.
Mr Musk promised the Beta 9.3 is “much improved!”, although he didn’t offer any detail on how.
The current Full Self-Driving (which is not full self-driving, despite its branding) Beta will make lane changes to exit a highway, drive around obstacles, and make left or right turns in keeping with the satellite navigation.
Users of the FSD 9.2 Beta have given mixed feedback on its effectiveness in the real world.
Some owners have shared videos of it working flawlessly, others have show it veering towards obstacles.
Tesla rolled out the software to a select group of Beta testers, and warned “it may do the wrong thing at the worst time”.
“Use Full Self-Driving in limited Beta only if you will pay constant attention to the road, and be prepared to act immediately, especially around blind corners, crossing intersections, and in narrow driving situations.”
The system is available to owners who ticked the “Full Self-Driving” option at purchase ($10,000 on Model 3 in Australia).
Although all Tesla models come with the hardware required to use the software, the options box needs to be ticked for it to be activated.
