Tesla tops 200,000 deliveries in Q2, 2021

Tesla has set a new quarterly sales record.

The electric vehicle startup delivered 201,250 cars worldwide in the second quarter of 2021 – more than double the 91,000 it delivered in the heavily-pandemic-affected second quarter of 2020.

Model 3 and Model Y sales accounted for the vast majority of those deliveries.

Tesla built 206,421 and delivered 199,360 examples of its mid-sized sedan and SUV, compared to just 1890 deliveries of the larger Model S sedan and Model X SUV.

Production of the updated Model S and Model X has recently started for the USA, which should see delivery numbers rise in the second half of 2021.

The record result comes despite semiconductor shortages, price rises across its range in some parts of the world, and a massive recall in China.

“Our teams have done an outstanding job navigating through global supply chain and logistics challenges,” the company said in a statement.

Tesla is chasing a “stretch goal” of 900,000 deliveries in 2021. It’s sitting on 386,050 cars to date this year.
