US Highway Patrol goes Need for Speed with Corvette cop car

The Chevrolet Corvette may not be the most practical police car, but Florida Highway Patrol is now using the mid-engined sports car to gain the public’s attention.

A Corvette which was seized by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force (DEA) is now wrapped in the black and tan State Trooper colour scheme, though it won’t ever be used in a pursuit.

Instead – like many other high-powered exotic cars found in various police forces across the globe – it will appear at “various educational outreach events”, meaning it’s more likely to be occupied by children being photographed than arrested criminals.

That’s unfortunate, as the two-seater can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds, thanks to its 6.2-litre V8 producing up to 369kW and 637Nm – great credentials for a pursuit vehicle.

It’s not uncommon for police forces to use seized vehicles for promotional purposes, as they not only draw more attention to their cause but also end up being sold when they’re no longer required.
