Volvo S60 and S80 recalled

Volvo is recalling its 2003-10 S60 and S80 sedans as a faulty driver’s airbag that could rupture in the event of a crash.

The fault includes all S60 models sold from model years 2004-09, as well as all S80 models sold from model years 2004-05.

“The driver’s airbag inflator may rupture in the event of airbag deployment in the event of a crash,” the company says in its recall notice.

“In the event that a defective airbag inflator ruptures, metal fragments may propel out through the airbag cushion towards the vehicle occupants causing serious injury or death.”

This airbag recall isn’t isolated to Australia, with CNBC reporting Volvo has been forced to recall 460,769 cars.

In the US alone there are 259,383 affected vehicles.

Although very similar to the Takata airbag recall, the airbags installed in these Volvo vehicles were sourced from Swedish-based AutoLiv and German auto supplier ZF, according to documents filed with the NHTSA in the US.

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to schedule a free fix at your preferred Volvo dealership.

Volvo will replace the driver’s airbag.
