There’s yet another small electric SUV in town, this time in the form of the Jaecoo J5 EV.

Based on the same platform as the Chery E5, the J5 EV will arrive in a single trim level priced at $35,888 before on-road costs, or $36,990 drive-away for the first 1000 people to place an order.

As such, it will compete with other affordable compact EVs including the Leapmotor B10, BYD Atto 2, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Zeekr X, and MG S5 EV, all of which are dearer than the Jaecoo.

However, the J5 EV isn’t the cheapest electric SUV on the market, as that title remains with the smaller Atto 2 ($31,990 before on-road costs).

Like the related E5, the J5 EV features a single electric motor mounted on the front axle. Both generate 155kW, although the J5 EV (288Nm) is down on torque compared to its cousin (340Nm). Power comes from a 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

Omoda Jaecoo claims an electric range figure of 402km on the WLTP cycle, as well as energy consumption of 14.3kWh/100km. A 30-80 per cent charge on a DC fast-charger takes a claimed 28 minutes.

Jaecoo is promoting the J5 EV as a pet- and child-friendly vehicle, attributing that label to unique interior upholstery finished in a durable silicone coating.

The J5 range will expand further in 2026 with the launch of turbo-petrol and hybrid variants, both of which will sit below the electric version in Jaecoo’s lineup.
