2027 Volkswagen ID.3 Neo: Updated EV is a “true VW” with actual buttons and switches

The VW ID.3 has received an update substantial enough to merit a new name, bringing a more user-friendly interior and new features.

While the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo may look much like the outgoing ID.3 externally, the small electric hatchback has been substantially overhauled inside as the German auto giant looks to right some of the wrongs it committed with its electric vehicles (EVs).

After confirming in 2023 it would launch the ID.3 here, by 2025 the Golf-sized EV was off the table for our market. We’ve contacted Volkswagen Australia to confirm if the ID.3 Neo update changes the calculus.

The Neo’s fresh interior addresses many of the usability concerns owners had with the outgoing ID.3.

There are now conventional window controls on the doors, a volume knob on the centre console, and a row of knurled metal-looking rocker switches on the centre stack to control things like the fan speed and cabin temperature.

A larger 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits above these, with a row of anchored shortcut buttons at its base to control functions like air direction and the heated seats.

There’s a larger 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit digital instrument cluster, with a selectable analogue dial display.

In addition to traditional buttons and switches, Volkswagen says the ID.3 Neo has “high-quality materials that have a pleasant feel”.

Ahead of the driver is a new steering wheel which, in addition to conventional buttons instead of touch-capacitive switches, boasts a flattened rim at the top and bottom.

There’s a choice of 50kWh and 58kWh batteries with a 105kW maximum DC fast-charge rate, and a 79kWh battery with a 183kW DC charge rate. Maximum range is 630km on the WLTP cycle.

There’s also a choice of three rear-mounted electric motors, with outputs of 125kW, 140kW and 170kW – the latter is available only with the largest battery pack.

Volkswagen says “everything is new in the ID.3 Neo”, but externally it’s still recognisable as an ID.3 with its tall-looking body and stubby bonnet.

However, it has received design cues from Volkswagen’s new Pure Positive design language, chiefly a restyled front-end bearing a resemblance to that of the upcoming ID. Polo and featuring a full-width light bar.

The ID.3 Neo also features a body-colour roof, rear spoiler and boot-lid to make it “appear longer, flatter and more dynamic”.

Other changes include the addition of enhanced Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition; an app store for the infotainment system; a one-pedal drive mode; and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality with an output of 3.6kW, allowing you to power small electrical appliances.

While the ID.3 has never been offered in Australia, the closely related Cupra Born has. It went on hiatus here last year, and its return timing has yet to be announced.

Like the ID.3, it has also received a mid-life update bringing a refreshed exterior, a more user-friendly interior, and new 58kWh and 79kWh batteries.

Volkswagen is launching a new ninth-generation Golf with electric power, though this isn’t expected to arrive any earlier than 2028.

While the existing combustion-powered Mk8.5 Golf will be sold alongside it, it’s unclear how much more runway the ID.3 has given it’ll likely overlap with the new electric Golf.
