Audi e-tron electric car recalled for fire risk

Audi is recalling its 2018-22 e-tron electric SUV due to the risk of a battery fire.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the high voltage battery may experience a thermal overload if charged over 80 percent capacity,” the company says in its recall notice.

“If this occurs, the battery could overheat and lead to a vehicle fire.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll be contacted by Audi Australia and asked to make an appointment with one of its dealerships to have the battery inspected, free of charge.

In the meantime, Audi recommends you limit the charging target to 80 per cent capacity using the touchscreen settings menu or myAudi app.

Audi says that while its software upgrade development is underway, it strongly advises you return your vehicle for an inspection and potential battery replacement every four months.
