China is helping keep station wagons alive

The world may be a sea of SUVs now, but China has produced another sleek wagon... even if only Europeans seem to want to buy them anymore.

Zeekr has revealed its next new model, and it’s not just another SUV.

Instead, the Zeekr 007 GT is a sleek station wagon, which will go on sale in China during the second quarter of 2025.

The Chinese brand is calling the 007 GT its “second shooting brake”, after the 001 – Zeekr’s debut model – which blurs the lines between hatchback and wagon.

The 007 GT has quite a different look to the 001 however. Ahead of the B-pillars, it’s identical to the 007 sedan, but its side crease kinks upwards towards the rear to help form prominent shoulders.

The roofline gently slopes downwards, while there’s an unusual D-pillar treatment with black trim connecting the rear side window and the tailgate window.

Bodywork creasing connects to a duck-tail spoiler above a full-width light bar.

While powertrain details have yet to be announced, the 007 sedan it’s based on has an 800V electrical system and a choice of 75kWh lithium iron phosphate or 100kWh ternary lithium batteries.

    It’s available with either 310kW/440Nm single-motor rear-wheel drive or 475kW/710Nm dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.

SUVs are becoming increasingly popular in China, long a market that has embraced sedans.

Wagons have historically been much lower in volume – sales that is, not cargo – and yet the Zeekr 007 GT is the latest new long-roof from a Chinese brand.

It follows the debuts of the S Hunting Edition from rival brand Neta last year, and the Nio ET5 Touring that debuted in 2023.

The latter was believed to have been developed to help broaden the brand’s appeal in Europe, which it had recently entered, and the Zeekr 007 GT may have been developed for the same reason.

Zeekr is entering more global markets, having arrived in Australia late in 2024 with the small X SUV and 009 people mover. The 7X SUV will follow this year.

The brand has yet to confirm its other models – the 001 ‘shooting brake’, Mix people mover and 007 sedan – for our market.

While it was established in 2021 as an electric-only brand, it’s set to launch its first plug-in hybrids in China this year.
