Ford has revealed a new dragster with a difference.
The new Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 has 1400hp (1044kW) of power and almost 1500Nm of torque, good for an eight-ish second quarter mile at more than 270km/h.
The difference? It’s fully electric.
That hasn’t held it back though. The petrol-powered Cobra Jet and its supercharged V8 can only manage a 8.5-second quarter mile at just 241km/h.
“Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit,” said Dave Pericak, global director for ‘Ford Icons’.
“We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family.”
Ford hasn’t revealed what sort of battery is lurking within the Cobra 1400’s chassis. At the moment it’s a one-off, and the Blue Oval says fans will be able to see the car at an event later this year.
With the USA currently battling one of the world’s worst COVID-19 crises, when that will be remains to be seen.
