About the Toyota Corolla
Last updated Sep 28, 2025The 2025 Toyota Corolla remains essentially unchanged from the previous years, with the current generation now offered with hybrid powertrains only. This does not include the sporty GR Corolla, which maintains its turbocharged engine and available in both manual and automatic.
The Corolla is offered as a hatch and a sedan, with the hatch having launched in 2018 and the sedan coming in 2020. The current model of the Toyota Corolla sold in Australia is the 12th generation (E210) of one of the world's best known car models, with the first model having launched all the way back in 1966. More than 50 million have been produced since then.
We anticipate that the next-generation of the Toyota Corolla should be unveiled in 2025 and hit Australian shores by late 2025 or early 2026.

The focus here is on simplicity and functionality, delivering exactly what's needed without unnecessary embellishments.
While the Ascent Sport cabin contains a higher proportion of durable materials, everything feels well-constructed and built to last, though the centre tunnel may shift slightly under pressure. The driver's display features a basic 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster flanked by dot matrix-style gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. Though not as advanced as the 12.3-inch digital panel in the ZR variant, this display is standard on many Lexus models, highlighting its practicality.
The 8.0-inch central touchscreen runs Toyota's latest interface, offering standard navigation in the hybrid model alongside wireless smartphone mirroring, which performed flawlessly. The software is straightforward and user-friendly, making it well-suited for an entry-level grade. This model also includes a 12-month subscription to Toyota Connected Services, providing SOS emergency call, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle tracking, and remote services via the myToyota Connect app, though subscription costs apply after the first year.
Storage is well catered for, with numerous slots and compartments, including a phone-shaped cubby under the dashboard, though no wireless charger is provided in this trim.
The Corolla Sedan outperforms the Hatch for those who frequently use the second row due to its 60mm extended wheelbase, which offers more leg and knee room. The rear space is basic, lacking rear air vents but featuring a storage slot and a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders. ISOFIX and top tether points are provided for child seats, covering all essential needs.
The Corolla Sedan also boasts a generous 470 litres of boot space, significantly more than the Corolla Hatch’s 217 litres, making it a practical choice within its class. The wide boot opening facilitates the loading of larger items, and a space-saving spare tyre is stored under the boot floor.

While the related Corolla Cross SUV benefits from a 10.5-inch touchscreen, the top-spec Corolla is equipped with an 8.0-inch unit. Instead, the vehicle emits a subtle beep, indicating it's ready to go. Exceptions occur in colder conditions or when the high-voltage battery is depleted, causing the petrol engine to engage at startup. Even then, the engine remains relatively quiet, though it momentarily disrupts the tranquil electric vehicle (EV) silence.
Once in motion, the Corolla Hybrid operates smoothly, particularly at low speeds. From 0-40km/h, it effortlessly keeps pace with or outperforms traffic, primarily running on electric power. This performance is enhanced by the front axle-mounted electric motor and the updated lithium-ion battery pack introduced since the 2023 model. When more power is required, or when in "Power Mode," the petrol engine kicks in to assist, though it can be slightly intrusive as it tends to rev high when electric power wanes.
Despite its smaller battery compared to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full EVs, the Corolla Hybrid optimises its petrol-electric hybrid system for urban driving, remaining in EV mode whenever possible.
