The original Hyundai Ioniq Electric hatch is now subject to a nationwide product safety recall due to a potential short-circuit which could lead to a vehicle fire.
“A software issue in the Battery Management System (BMS) may cause an electrical short circuit while charging or parked leading to a vehicle fire,” said Hyundai in its recall notice, which echoes the recall notice for the related Kona Electric also issued today.
“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll be contacted by Hyundai Motor Company Australia and asked to schedule an appointment with an authorised Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.
Your Ioniq EV’s battery will be diagnosed for a software update or battery cell rectification, free of charge.
